Cerny/American and
The Twilight Zone
09.2006
Carl
Amari of The Falcon Picture Group entered into an agreement with
CBS Enterprises and the Rod Serling Estate and gained the rights
to produce The Twilight Zone for Radio Broadcast Production.
Carl chose Cerny/American to do the editing, sound design, foley
effects,
and final mixing of the series. Our
engineering staff loves the challenges each show presents and puts
100 hours of sound design into each episode.
The studio has expanded its collection of foley equipment to create
customized sound effects and added many different types of flooring
surfaces just for walking effects.
When
I first built the studios, we frequently went out on the street
to collect specialized sound effects, says JoBe Cerny, and
Ive always encouraged our engineers to create specialized
sound effects for the studios exclusive sound effects library.
Every studio has the basic collections of effects, but we go far
beyond
those capabilities. Over the years, our commitment to create new
sound effects in foley sessions has made our work unique. The
Twilight Zone gives us a tremendous opportunity to showcase our sound design
and foley capabilities.
The
Twilight Zone series currently airs on 150 stations nationwide
as well as XM, Sirius, and the
BBC. In Chicago, the series is on
WGN. The radio series uses scripts from the original television
series, including Rod Serling scripts that were never produced.
While the
scripts have been adapted for radio, the series is not an attempt
to replicate old time radio. The scripts have been updated, and
the production style is very current. The end result is a fresh,
contemporary
radio drama produced at the highest production levels.
Stacy
Keach takes over for Rod Serling on the series, and each episode
has a guest star. While Prison Break was filming in Chicago,
the series stars (Robert Knepper, Sarah Wayne Callies, Marshall
Allman, and Wade Williams) came in on their day off to record episodes.
Many Los Angeles based stars including Jim Caviezel, Jane Seymour,
Jason Alexander, Luke Perry, John Schneider, Paul Dooley, Mike Starr,
and Henry Rollins also have guest starred on the series. But each
episode features many of Chicagos talented voice over performers.
The Twilight Zone has created hundreds of jobs for Chicago talent.
The episodes are recorded at Falcon Picture Group in Schaumburg.
In most episodes the entire cast is recorded as an ensemble. However
in some special instances, recordings are done at Cerny/American.
In episodes featuring children, frequently JoBe Cerny directs them
in separate sessions. Sometimes, child actors feel a little
intimidated being in a room with a lot of adults. When we record
ensemble, the entire cast needs to be well studied before we begin
and right on cue. When we record the child actors later, it is easier
to get a better performance. In particular, two incredible
child performances were given in the episodes The Gift and Mute.
Everyone
at Cerny/American is very proud of our work on The Twilight Zone.
