When you are trying to cast unusual voices, here are some
things you might not know. Many people think the voice is
all talent. It isn’t. Special voices are made in special
ways. The engineer’s choice of the microphone and its placement
greatly affects the actor’s performance. Casting for cartoon
characters is often difficult because engineers record them like
they do announcers. What’s the difference? Announcers
live in recording studios and sound like it; cartoon characters
live in a three dimensional world and need to be recorded like
they are on location. Traditionally, cartoon voices are recorded
in larger rooms or stages and the microphone is boomed. At
some point in your life you may have seen a film clip of Mel Blanc
doing Bugs Bunny. He really used a lot of volume to create
the voice. A voice like that can not be done “on Mic” like
an announcer. When we cast, we bring a lot of practical recording
experience to the equation so we can create the right sound. Our
extensive collection of specialty microphones are available for
our casting sessions. Microphones are like musical instruments…each
one has a specific sound. The right choice of microphones
can bring out the best or worst in a talent.

Neumann U87 is a FET Neumann. Like the
367, it has a very rich, full sound and full dynamic range. At
the highest levels of recording it is the most commonly used
microphone. Most of our work is recorded on these microphones. |
SE
5500 is a modern day reproduction of the classic tube
microphones. Its tubes are interchangeable to approximate the
sounds of various microphones. It is a fine microphone, but
it does not achieve the full dynamic range, richness or warmth
of the vintage tube Neumanns. However, it is valuable for creating
a bright sound and is useful as a contrast microphone when
recording large casts in a radio commercial. |
AKG 414 is a modern condenser microphone. It is bright
and detailed and offers an alternative contemporary sound. |
Shure
55B is a crystal microphone. Most people have seen
pictures of Elvis singing and lovingly cradling this type microphone
in his hands. We occasionally use it to create a vintage sound. |
